Surgeons who need to perform a corneal transplant prior to vitreoretinal surgery may find themselves hampered by the poor visualization quality of current endoscopic vitrectomy modalities. Temporary keratoprostheses (TKPs) have often been employed for these challenging cases, but the Eckardt TKPs are no longer being manufactured, and TKPs are often difficult and time-consuming to insert and are prone to leakage. To overcome these problems and to fill in the treatment gap left by Eckardt's departure from the marketplace, Drs. Michael Snyder and Christopher Riemann have developed a next-generation, quick-set TKP.
Brandon D. Ayres, MD, joins Neda Shamie, MD, to discuss an FDA clinical trial that evaluated the safety and efficacy of a custom-manufactured artificial iris device (CustomFlex ArtificialIris, HumanOptics) for the treatment of congenital and acquired iris defects. Learn the results.
